The box marked Safety
Architecture diagrams for automated driving systems usually contain boxes marked Safety, accompanied by an explanation of how they keep the vehicle safe when something goes wrong. What the diagrams do not show is what failures those safety systems can actually recover from. That capability constrains the vehicle when nothing has gone wrong at all, and turns a safety question into a product specification.
